I'm a Peabody Award-nominated independent journalist based in New York City. I write and make audio stories about all kinds of things: Recently I went to Ukraine to find a publisher selling weird editions of Jane Austen novels on Amazon, profiled a circus acrobat who restarted her career after amputation, and tried “hitokara,” the Japanese practice of doing karaoke alone.

Previously I was the Global Managing Editor at BuzzFeed and an editor at Youth Communication, where I helped produce magazines written by New York City teens and youth in foster care. I've worked and traveled extensively across the former Soviet Union: I taught English in Ukraine as a Peace Corps Volunteer, ran a theater camp in Tajikistan and reported by bicycle from Moscow for NPR. Before journalism, I worked in nonprofit program management and communications.

I graduated from the Newmark J-School and I’ve taught journalism to undergrads at Hunter and Lehman Colleges in the CUNY system.

Freelance communities are integral to my work. I’m a union organizer with the Freelance Solidarity Project and a member of the Association for Independents in Radio.

I’m available for freelance assignments, consulting and teaching opportunities. You can find me at susie [dot] armitage @ gmail [dot] com.
